An important element of any website is the hosting – the physical place your website is stored. Here at B46 we offer two options: Shared Hosting and VPS (Virtual Private Server) Hosting.
With shared hosting, your site will be stored alongside a number of other websites, all running on the same server, all sharing the resources of the server – including RAM, CPU and disk space.
PROS OF SHARED HOSTING
1: The most affordable option – smaller websites mean more customers can be hosted on each server thus reducing the individual cost
2: Easier to manage – the hosting provider will manage all of the server updates and security
CONS OF SHARED HOSTING
As the resources are shared with other websites, shared hosting is not ideal for larger sites with many visitors.
1: Can be slow – other websites on the server will be using the resources at the same time as you and, if another site is using more resources then your website could become slower – a common cause of visitors leaving!
2: Other users putting a strain on the server can cause it to shut down – another sure fire way of driving your visitors away!
VPS – VIRTUAL PRIVATE SERVER HOSTING
A VPS allows the hosting provider to allocate a set of resources specifically for your website – for example you could be given 1CPU core and 2Gb of RAM that only you are using.
This means that you have guaranteed resources, and there will be fewer other customers hosted on that server.
PROS OF VPS HOSTING
1: Security – in order to allocate your VPS, the host effectively partitions off your server from all other users.
2: Speed – as the CPU and RAM allocated to you is only used by your website, other users activity will not affect you.
3: Scalabilty – as your website grows, a VPS will allow you to add more resources as and when you need them
CONS OF VPS HOSTING
1: A VPS is more expensive than shared hosting
2: A VPS can be difficult to configure and manage – unless you have a managed solution, you will be handling updates etc yourself!
Here at B46 we can offer both types of hosting as well as a fully managed solution – please Contact Us for us to discuss your requirements.
